1 · The one-page read
None of the five journey pages we are selling New Year against is built around a date, and three of them collide with the calendar the moment you put one on them. Australia sends families to Cairns in stinger and cyclone season. Japan's page sells Tokyo museums and markets in the one week a year they shut. London's page sells a Bath day out for a market that closes on 13 December. The pages are good year-round pages. They are not New Year pages, and the difference is fourteen dated facts we now have and the competition does not.
The seven New Year files that accompany this note fix that. Each has a one-pager, a day-by-day with weekdays on every date, cohort variants, a ranked add-on menu, an age-band card and a verification register. The window is Sat 26 / Sun 27 Dec 2026 to Sat 2 / Sun 3 Jan 2027 for five of them. Two cannot fit it and say so: Japan + USA needs 11 nights and a US visa the client already holds; Kiribati needs 13 nights door to door because the island has one flight a week.
What the calendar gives us this year: 31 December is a Thursday and 1 January is a Friday, so New Year sits on a long weekend and the return on Sunday 3 January is natural. Boxing Day is a Saturday, which makes Monday 28 December a substitute bank holiday in the UK. Japan's shogatsu closures (29 Dec – 3 Jan) cover almost the whole window. The Boxing Day Test is Australia v New Zealand, 26–30 December, and general tickets went on sale in June.
2 · Page-by-page review against the New Year window
Japan (7 nights, year-round). Right instinct — "do less, deliberately", Tokyo plus Fuji, Kyoto for another trip. Wrong for New Year without changes: Tokyo National Museum, Ghibli, Tsukiji and Toyosu all close or thin out from 27–29 December pattern; most independent restaurants shut on 1 January; Shibuya's countdown has been cancelled six years running with alcohol bans and fencing verified; DisneySea has no New Year's Eve event agent-sourced. What the page misses that the week gives: joya-no-kane, hatsumode at Meiji Jingu, hatsuhinode with Fuji in view, the Emperor's 2 January greeting, fukubukuro. The New Year file moves NYE to the Fuji base, does hatsumode at Meiji Jingu at dusk on 1 January after the transfer back, and keeps the all-night JR trains on the card for the Tokyo-NYE variant only. Keep the page's vegetarian honesty; it matters more on 1 January than any other day of the year.
Australia (9 nights). The three-base sweep is right in July and wrong in December. Cairns in the last week of December is wet season, stinger season and cyclone season, with the Kuranda railway and Skyrail shut on Christmas Day; it also costs the trip a fourth flight. The New Year file drops Cairns to a variant and builds Melbourne (the Test, Great Ocean Road) into Sydney (NYE from a free Botanic Garden lawn, Blue Mountains on 2 January). The page's visa warning is correct and should move to the first screen for this window — subclass 600 in the October–December peak runs to six to eight weeks pattern. The page has no Aboriginal content; the New Year file adds an Aboriginal-led harbour walk and the pack should not ship without it.
United Kingdom — London & Beyond (5 nights). The one-hotel, Tube-first design is exactly right for a December week with sunset at 15:55. Faults for this window: the Stonehenge–Bath day sells a Christmas market that ended on 13 December; day trips by train sit inside Network Rail's 23 Dec – 4 Jan works window with the route list not yet published; the page does not mention the Mayor's fireworks are ticketed and released in October, or the New Year's Day Parade, which is free and the best family event of the week. Lord's is the page's strongest Indian hook and it should stay.
Goa (5 nights, domestic). Already the most honest page on the site about December — "loud and priced accordingly; we route further south then." The New Year file keeps the south-first shape and adds what the page could not know: Sunburn has left Goa for Mumbai verified, Serendipity ends 20 December, Uber and Ola are still barred, Dudhsagar is open, and since the Arpora nightclub fire of 6 December 2025 every NYE venue we use gets an exits-and-capacity check we describe to the client. This is the trip for last-minute bookers and for families who do not want a visa on the critical path.
Dubai (5 nights). The page's sequencing instinct — sunset Burj, safari timed for the light, white space — carries straight into New Year. What it lacks: the address change to the beach side before NYE, the fact that the whole window is inside Dubai's school holidays verified, the new pre-application visa documents, and the unresolved question of whether a UK visa still earns visa on arrival gap — do not publish until confirmed. Dubai is our lowest-friction New Year abroad and should be positioned as the one we can still sell in mid-December.
Japan + USA (new). Sellable, memorable, and gated. The dateline gives us the honest headline — the longest New Year's Day on Earth, or two New Year's Eves — and the Honolulu flights make it real. But first-time US visa interviews in India are running four to fourteen months verified, State Dept 17 Aug 2026. Sell it only to holders of a valid US visa; put that sentence first.
Kiribati (new). True and hard. Kiritimati is genuinely the first inhabited place into 2027, and the only flight is a Tuesday-night Fiji Airways rotation that comes back on Wednesday — so seven nights on the atoll, thirteen door to door, two basic hotels, fish for dinner. Tarawa is reachable in the window but is UTC+12 and behind Auckland, so it does not carry the story. Build it as an expedition product for a dozen clients a year, not a New Year headline.
3 · Cross-cutting fixes before anything ships
- Every New Year page carries a dated collision register — closures, ticket release dates, events, daylight. The seven files have one each. The CMS schema needs a
windowfield and averificationblock so this survives the move to Sanity. - NYE venue duty of care. After Arpora, every indoor NYE venue we book anywhere gets a written exits, capacity and pyrotechnics check, and we tell the client we did it. It costs nothing and it is the most defensible sentence in the proposal.
- Visa gates on page one. US (existing visa only), UK (open files by mid-October), Australia (lodge by mid-October — the file says Sat 17 Oct), Japan (six to eight weeks; e-visa status to confirm), UAE (documents before application; UK-visa VOA unconfirmed), Kiribati and Fiji (visa-free, confirm officially), Goa (none).
- TCS message. From 1 April 2026 it is a flat 2 percent on overseas tour packages with no threshold verified. The old 20 percent cliff is gone and every sales conversation should say so.
- Insurance riders by name. Scuba (Australia), snow sports (Japan), skydive and dune buggy (Dubai), fishing and evacuation (Kiribati). Standard Indian policies exclude all of them.
- Slow mornings and the pantry are on every file. On 1 January in Tokyo the pantry is not a differentiator; it is lunch.
4 · What else we should build — ranked
The portfolio has a gap shape, not a destination gap: nothing short-haul and visa-free, nothing domestic except Goa, nothing in Europe, and no operationally sound version of the "first light" story. Ranked by how many of those it closes at once, how little visa friction it carries, and how strong the actual New Year event is.
| # | Journey | Why it earns a place | Window fit | Visa friction for Indians | Build note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | First Light — Auckland & Gisborne, New Zealand | The sellable version of the Kiribati story: UTC+13, Auckland's Sky Tower midnight is the first big-city countdown of 2027, Gisborne markets the first city sunrise; daily flights via Singapore or Sydney; ties to the existing New Zealand page and pairs with Sydney | 8–9 nights, fits | NZ visitor visa online, 4–8 weeks pattern — confirm, register row 11 | Build first. Sydney NYE + Auckland is not two midnights (Auckland is earlier), so sell it as Auckland NYE then Sydney recovery, or NZ-only |
| 2 | Singapore & Malaysia — the family countdown | Marina Bay countdown, Sentosa, Legoland Johor; vegetarian and Jain food everywhere; 5-hour flights; the natural upgrade from Dubai for South Indian families | 6–7 nights, fits | Singapore e-visa, a few working days pattern — confirm; Malaysia visa-free for Indians, 30 days, through 31 Dec 2026 pattern — confirm | Two bases, one land border, no internal flight |
| 3 | Rajasthan — a palace New Year | The domestic alternative to Goa for families and multigenerational groups: Udaipur lake NYE, Jaisalmer desert camp with a dune bonfire, Jaipur; cold, clear, no monsoon-of-people | 6–7 nights, fits | None | Reuse the Rajasthan page's Celebration lens; Magnetic Fields (mid-Dec) is outside the window — do not sell it |
| 4 | Sri Lanka — the short-haul south | Galle Fort NYE, Kandy, a tea-country night, whale season starting at Mirissa; 90-minute flights from the south; strong for Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi | 5–6 nights, fits | Free ETA for Indian passports, 30 days pattern — confirm current scheme | The lowest-friction international New Year we can offer |
| 5 | Vienna New Year's Concert & the Danube | The one European New Year with an event worth the Schengen paperwork: Vienna's Silvesterpfad, the 1 January concert (ballot — most clients see the public screening or the 30 Dec preview), Budapest thermal baths, Prague if 8 nights; most Christmas markets close by 26 Dec and only a few reopen as New Year markets pattern — confirm before selling any | 7–8 nights, fits | Schengen — files open by early October | Not yet in the research files; needs a fact-base entry, then a page |
| 6 | Lapland New Year — Rovaniemi | The aspirational one: polar night, huskies, glass igloos, the aurora odds honestly stated; Santa's village stays open through New Year | 6–7 nights, fits | Schengen (Finland) — open by early October | Reuse the Aurora page's honesty contract; price ceiling is the constraint, not the design |
| 7 | Hong Kong & Macau | Victoria Harbour NYE fireworks, Disneyland, a short haul from the east; pre-arrival registration for Indians is free and online | 5–6 nights, fits | Free pre-arrival registration pattern — confirm | Good for Kolkata and the North-East |
| 8 | Thailand — Bangkok & Phuket | ICONSIAM countdown, beach on 1 January; visa-free for Indians (60 days, pattern — confirm) | 6 nights, fits | Visa-free (confirm) | Family-first; friends' groups have Goa |
| 9 | Edinburgh Hogmanay, standalone | Torchlight Procession 29 Dec pattern — the London file's swap says 30 Dec and must be corrected, Street Party 31 Dec, Loony Dook 1 Jan; currently only a swap inside the London file | 5 nights, fits | UK visa | Street Party age rule is a gap — verify before it leaves the London file |
| 10 | Oman — Muscat & Musandam | The quiet alternative to Dubai for couples and elders: fjords, a desert night, no crowds; pairs with Dubai for a 9-night Gulf New Year | 5–6 nights, fits | Oman e-visa pattern | Build as a Dubai extension first |
| 11 | Kerala houseboat New Year | Domestic, slow, multigenerational; a houseboat at midnight on the backwaters is the anti-Goa | 5 nights, fits | None | Reuse the Kerala Celebration lens |
| 12 | Andaman New Year | Domestic, beach, snorkel, no visa; Havelock at midnight | 5–6 nights, fits | None (Indian nationals) | Flight capacity into Port Blair is the constraint in the last week of December |
Build the first five. They close the visa-free short-haul gap (2, 4), the domestic-not-Goa gap (3), Europe (5) and the first-light story (1). Numbers 6 to 12 are variants or extensions of pages we already have and can be built as lenses rather than new journeys.
5 · Cohort matrix — which journey for whom
| Cohort | First choice | Second | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Families with under-10s | Dubai | Goa | Short flight, everything open, beach NYE with a bed ten minutes away |
| Families with 8–16s | Japan | London (Harry Potter-first) | DisneySea on 28 Dec, USJ countdown for teens; Hogwarts in the Snow runs to 17 Jan |
| Multigenerational | Goa villa | Dubai | One address, own chef, no visa; Dubai's seated NYE venues for those who want spectacle |
| Couples & celebrations | Japan (Fuji NYE) | Japan + USA (two NYEs) | Fuji at first light on 1 January; the dateline for those with a US visa |
| Friends' groups 25–40 | Goa (vetted venue) | Australia (Sydney NYE) | Goa for the party with the safety check; Sydney for the world's fireworks from a free lawn |
| Cricket families | Australia | London (Lord's) | Australia v New Zealand at the MCG, 26–30 Dec |
| First trip abroad | Dubai | Singapore (to build) | Meet-and-assist, one address, three-hour flight |
| Expedition / one big story | Kiribati | Japan + USA | Thirteen nights and a true sentence |
| Last-minute bookers (after 1 Dec) | Goa | Dubai | No visa; visa in days |
